Why wattage tells you nothing about your LED light (& what you should look out for)
"How many watts is that lamp?" It’s by far the most frequently asked question when a nail technician is looking for a new LED lamp. And it’s an understandable question – wattage is the largest number on the box, it’s printed in bold in the specifications on every online shop, and it makes sense: more watts, more power, better curing. Right? Nope! So what should you actually look for when choosing a lamp you want to rely on for years to come?
What wattage actually measures
Wattage measures exactly one thing: how much electricity an appliance draws from the mains. It says nothing about what happens to that electricity.
Compare it to a car: fuel consumption tells you how much petrol goes into the tank, not how fast the car is travelling. A poorly tuned engine consumes a lot of fuel and delivers poor performance. It’s exactly the same with LED bulbs. Part of the power consumed is lost as heat, to the electronics, the display and the cooling system. What remains is converted into light, and even then the question remains as to whether that light has the correct wavelength and whether it reaches the nail at all.
A 96-watt lamp with poor reflection and the wrong spectrum may therefore cure less effectively than a well-designed 36-watt lamp. The number on the box is not a quality label. It’s an electricity bill.
What should you look out for?
For three things:
- The wavelength range
- The light distribution within the lamp
- The service life of the LEDs
We'll go through them, one by one.
The wavelength range: does your lamp speak the language of your gel?
Every gel, whether it’s a base coat, colour gel, builder or top coat, contains photoinitiators. These are the molecules that trigger the curing process as soon as they absorb light of the correct wavelength. No correct light, no reaction. It’s as simple as that.
And here’s where it gets interesting: different gel systems use different photoinitiators, and these react to different parts of the UV spectrum. Traditional UV gels react to different light than modern LED gels. A lamp that emits only a narrow band of the spectrum will cure some products perfectly, but others only partially.
And that’s dangerous! The gel feels hard on the surface, and your client goes home satisfied. But underneath, against the nail plate, the curing is incomplete. A week later, the gel starts to lift. And then the gel gets the blame, or the preparation, whilst the real cause was in the lamp.
This will only become more important in the coming years. Due to European TPO regulations, gel formulas are being adapted and manufacturers are switching to different photoinitiators. Anyone buying a narrow-spectrum lamp today is buying a lamp that may no longer be compatible with their products tomorrow.

Light distribution: curing takes place on the nail, not in the lamp
Imagine a lamp with powerful LEDs all positioned at the top. The top of the middle finger gets the full brunt of the light. But what about the sides of the thumb and little finger? They’re half in the shade. The result: five nails, five different levels of curing. And there’s that inexplicable lifting again, always on the same fingers.

You might not realise it, but your lamp ages too. It doesn’t seem to be broken and still shines just as brightly, but after 4–5 years it does lose its curing power. Suddenly, products that you’ve been using without any problems for years start to lift. So you choose a new primer, use a different technique, spend twice as long on the job, but it doesn’t help. Chances are it’s not your product or your technique that’s the problem, but your ageing lamp.

- How is the light distributed? Does the interior have a mirrored finish? Is the base reflective? Does the light reach the sides of your thumb and little finger?
- How many operating hours are the LEDs guaranteed for? A lamp you have to replace every two years isn’t a bargain.
- Is there a solution for heat-sensitive clients? Comfort is part of your service.
Wattage is the easiest figure to advertise, and the least meaningful for comparison. What cures your gel is the right light, in the right place, year after year at full power.
